Pay It Forward Mentoring Program
What is the program?
Collective Possibilities regularly receives requests from our clients about the possibility of introducing them to a suitable mentor. These requests have made us realise how many amazing people we know who have a wealth of experience to share that would benefit people who are looking to develop themselves in their careers. This program seeks to match people with an appropriate mentor.
What is mentoring?
Mentoring is a relationship between two people based on a mutual desire for long term development. It can help the mentee with greater clarity of career goals, insight into organisational culture, different perspectives/ approaches, new contacts/ networks. A mentor can benefit from the relationship by being shown different perspectives, being challenged on perceived wisdom, new contacts/ networks. Mentoring is not coaching, coaching is working with a person around a specific skill (technical/ behavioural) that they are looking to develop.
Why pay it forward?
We all know that the world would be a much better place if everyone actively practiced kindness. Most successful people have had at least one ‘mentor’ (formal/ informal) that has supported them on their career journey. For mentors this is an opportunity to pay it forward, if you have never had that support it’s an opportunity for you to start this act of kindness. For mentees, once you have experienced the mentoring relationship, we will invite you to consider paying it forward and becoming a mentor yourself.
How does it work?
Mentors make a commitment for around 12 months to be available as a potential mentor for one person. When we receive a request for a mentor we match suitable people together and put them in contact with one another. After this initial contact, it is up to the mentee to arrange a meeting with the mentor. The ongoing mentoring relationship is then driven by the mentee and their needs. If either person does not feel that they are a suitable match we can suggest another mentor.
What’s in it for us?
Collective Possibilities does not charge for this matching service, we are merely formalising a currently informal process to ensure that we can readily respond to requests when we receive them. We see this as a valuable way to pay It forward to the community we operate within.
